Eemshaven's digital-infrastructure cluster is expanding on two fronts. QTS, the Atlanta-based operator that has owned the port's existing data centre campus since 2019, is investing €1.4 billion to build EEMSDC2, a new hall on Kwelderweg with a floor area of almost three football pitches that will double the campus's capacity by 2029, according to RTV Noord and Dutch IT Channel. Separately, Google is building a further, distinct data centre on Eemshaven-Zuidoost, for which grid operator TenneT and contractor Van Gelder KLM installed a two-kilometre, 220,000-volt cable connection through 2025, as reported by Eemshavenonline. This sits alongside Google's wider €3.8 billion-plus programme of Dutch data-centre investment since 2014, including a further €600 million Groningen-region facility announced in 2024, per Google. Both programmes bring civil, electrical, HV-cabling and commissioning contractors into the port concurrently through the second half of this decade.
Precise on-site contractor headcounts for either project have not been published. QTS has said its campus works involve "hundreds or even thousands" of construction-phase jobs, against a target of around 130 permanent operating roles once EEMSDC2 is live, a gap this page should not fill with an invented figure, per RTV Noord. Eemshaven itself has almost no resident population; the nearest towns are Uithuizen, around 5,470 residents, and Delfzijl, around 15,395 residents, both roughly 15-25 minutes' drive from site, per AlleCijfers.nl. The nearest larger city, Groningen, has around 244,000 residents and is 30-45 minutes away by car, bus or the direct Eemshaven rail link. Hotel stock near the port is thin, led by the 20-room Eemshotel in Delfzijl, per Eemshotel, which is why specialist furnished-housing operators such as Eemsdelta Housing already serve industrial and data-centre crews across Eemshaven, Delfzijl, Appingedam and Uithuizen on a weekly basis.
