The short version

What crew accommodation in south Wales has to solve

The work is spread along the M4, not concentrated in one city. Bridgend has the largest of the sites, Waterton, where the former Ford engine plant is being rebuilt as a ten-building data centre campus over about 15 years. St Athan sits 20-odd miles east at Bro Tathan, next to Cardiff Airport, with its own consented scheme and an Aston Martin plant already on the park. Newport holds Vantage's operating CWL1 campus plus the Vishay and KLA semiconductor investments. Barry, Cardiff and Porthcawl are where the beds are.

So the useful question is not "somewhere near Cardiff" but which town puts your crew closest to the gate, with parking for the vans and a car-free option where one exists. Bonjour Residences is an independent agency. We do not own units. We source them from a vetted partner network, including local owners who never list online, and we stand behind the booking, the invoice and the support for the length of the stay.

Vantage data centre campus, former Ford engine plantWaterton, Bridgend CF31 3BFApproved unanimously by Bridgend Council's planning committee on 2 October 2025: ten data centre buildings and associated substations, phased over about 15 years. Building 1 (CWL41) is 14,080 sq m with works starting in early 2026 for a build period of around 24 months. The planning statement gives approximately 1,500 FTE on-site construction jobs across the build and about 600 FTE operational jobs (officers' report and planning statement)

Vantage has said it expects to deliver more than 1 GW of AI-ready capacity across Newport, Bridgend and Bro Tathan. Headcounts above are the developers' own planning figures, not our estimates, and where an operator has published no construction headcount we do not invent one.

Where crews live

The towns that actually work for a crew

Bridgend and Porthcawl. Bridgend town is the closest base to the Waterton site and sits on the South Wales Main Line, so a crew without vans still has a train option. Porthcawl adds stock about 7 miles west and is quieter midweek.

Barry and Rhoose. Barry is the largest town in the Vale of Glamorgan and the nearest real housing stock to Bro Tathan and Cardiff Airport. Rhoose has a station on the Vale of Glamorgan line, which matters for crews arriving by air.

Cowbridge and Llantwit Major. Small-town stock between Bridgend and St Athan, useful when the Bridgend and Barry supply is taken.

Cardiff. Deepest supply and the easiest option for short mobilisations or split teams, roughly 20 miles from both Waterton and Bro Tathan, with a train to Bridgend.

Newport. For CWL1 and the semiconductor work, and a fallback when Cardiff is full for an event weekend.

Houses matter more than apartments here. A four to six-bedroom house with driveway parking usually beats city-centre flats for a van-based crew, and it is what the local supply is made of. Distances above are approximate straight-line road distances; we do not publish drive times as facts.

Rules and cost lines

Two UK-specific things to know before you book

Council tax, business rates, and a Cardiff visitor levy from 2027. What varies is whether a property is treated as a dwelling for council tax or as self-catering accommodation for non-domestic rates, and both councils apply council tax premiums on second homes and long-term empty dwellings: the Vale of Glamorgan holds a 100% premium on both categories for 2026/27 (Vale of Glamorgan explanatory notes), and Bridgend raises its premium from April 2026 (Bridgend County Borough Council). That sits with the owner, not with you, but it shapes which properties owners will release for a long crew stay. We tell you which basis each option is offered under. Separately, Cardiff Council will introduce a visitor levy from 1 April 2027 at £1.30 per person per night, with the lower 75p rate limited to hostels, dormitories and pitches, and providers in Cardiff must start accounting for it from 28 September 2026 (GOV.WALES, Visitor Levy in Wales, read 12 September 2026). Whether a given crew booking is in scope depends on the property: the Visitor Accommodation (Register and Levy) Etc. (Wales) Act 2025 defines short-term as stays of 31 nights or less (section 2(3)), so a longer crew stay may fall outside it. We confirm the position per option before you commit.

Peak weeks are event-driven, not seasonal. Cardiff's stadium calendar empties the region's stock for a weekend at a time: Six Nations weekends in February and March, and large concerts and autumn internationals. If your mobilisation or a rotation change falls on one of those weekends, book early or plan to sit in Bridgend and Barry rather than central Cardiff.

Process

How a booking runs

1

Send the requirement. Site address, team size, dates, budget. A gate address and a headcount is enough to start.

2

Get tailored options. Sourced from partners in the right part of south Wales, including owners who do not list online.

3

Confirm once. We handle booking coordination, contracts and staggered check-ins with every owner.

4

We hold the line. One channel for your team, one invoice for finance, for the length of the stay.

For finance and procurement

What your finance team gets

One invoice, not fourteen

One consolidated VAT-compliant invoice covering every property on the project, with each property and each stay period shown separately.

30-day terms, no card upfront

Corporate contracts run on 30-day payment terms. No personal cards exposed and no individual receipts for site staff to file.

One supplier record

One onboarding, one set of compliance documents, one contact, instead of a new landlord record for every town. See pricing for how rates are built.

We match the stay length to the right contract type in the local market. Clients have saved 20-30% by using the correct market for the length of stay.

Questions

Frequently asked

Where can we find accommodation for contractors in Bridgend?

In Bridgend town itself for the Waterton campus, with Porthcawl, Pyle and Cowbridge as overflow, and Cardiff as the deep-supply fallback. We source houses with driveway parking as a first choice for van-based crews.

Do you cover St Athan and Bro Tathan?

Yes. Barry, Rhoose and Llantwit Major are the closest real stock to Bro Tathan, with Cardiff about 20 miles away for larger or split teams.

What about contractor digs in Barry?

Barry is one of our core search areas in the Vale of Glamorgan, and it usually gives better value than central Cardiff for a stay of a month or more.

What team sizes and stay lengths do you handle?

Teams of 1 to 200+, handled as one coordinated booking. South Wales requirements usually land between 4 and 40 people for one month to a year.

Do you own the properties?

No. Bonjour Residences is an independent agency. We source from a vetted partner network, including local owners who do not list online, and we stand behind the booking, the invoice and the support.

How many workers will the Bridgend campus need?

Vantage's planning statement gives approximately 1,500 FTE on-site construction jobs across a 15-year build, with Building 1 starting in early 2026 for a build period of around 24 months. That is the developer's figure, not ours.

Which weeks should we book earliest for?

Cardiff event weekends, above all Six Nations weekends in February and March and stadium concert dates. On those weekends Bridgend, Barry and Newport hold up better than the city centre.
