QTS, owned by Blackstone, is building the Cambois data centre campus on the former Blyth Power Station site north of Cambois in Northumberland. Outline permission covers up to 10 buildings and 540,000 square metres, with up to £10bn of investment and 720 MW of critical IT load reported. Enabling works began in October 2025, the first two buildings were approved in December 2025, and Keller reported piling and foundations for halls 1 and 2 under way in August 2026. Reserved matters for buildings 3 and 4 were filed on 2 September 2026.
The accelerated programme targets the first two halls operational by the end of June 2029 and phase 2 by mid 2030, with the full campus estimated around 2035, although the phasing of later buildings is not fixed. The latest published estimate for the initial stages is 665 to 780 construction jobs. Cambois itself is a village of a few hundred people, so crews base in Blyth, with around 39,700 residents, Ashington and Cramlington. QTS aims to recruit within 25 miles, so demand will centre on specialist trades travelling in for mechanical, electrical and commissioning packages.
