Debrecen in Hajdu-Bihar county hosts two of Hungary's largest industrial builds. CATL announced a EUR 7.34 billion cell factory on 221 hectares in the Southern Industrial Park in August 2022, with 100 gigawatt hours of planned capacity phased from a first 40 gigawatt hour stage. BMW Group is building a vehicle plant of more than 400 hectares north west of the city, investment reported above EUR 2 billion, including battery assembly of around 140,000 square metres.
Both programmes have run long. CATL's cell production slipped from late 2025 into 2026, and in early September 2026 Hungarian and Chinese outlets reported that county authorities temporarily halted the cell line and parts of the site after a nickel exposure incident, with a phase two occupancy permit refused in August 2026 and the phase one permit granted days later. Equipment testing was still permitted. Local worker housing has been a public issue since 2022, when a container settlement for more than 2,000 guest workers on the BMW construction site was reported, and CATL has been recruiting internationally after exhausting the local labour pool.
