Eli Lilly is building an injectable medicines and delivery device plant in the Alzey-Ost industrial estate in Rhineland-Palatinate, announced in November 2023 at €2.3bn with an estimated 1,900 construction jobs. The groundbreaking was on 8 April 2024, and local press reported interior fit-out under way in March 2026 with production line test runs due that summer. In June 2026 Lilly cut the project scope by more than half: the buildings will be completed and minimum capacity operation is planned for 2027, while the decision on the remaining capacity is on hold. The revised investment and workforce have not been published, so treat the earlier figures as original forecasts.
Alzey has just over 20,200 residents. Local press reported in July 2025 that the works had lifted demand for hotel rooms from trades and project teams, and a housing study reported in November 2025 found about 2,800 homes lacking across Alzey-Worms.
