Eli Lilly is building a biologics drug substance campus in the business park at Raheen on the edge of Limerick city. The investment was announced at USD 400 million in January 2022, doubled to around USD 1 billion in March 2023 and expanded by a further USD 1 billion in September 2024, taking the cumulative figure past USD 2 billion for a facility of about 500,000 square feet with 450 permanent roles once ramped. Ground was broken in March 2023. The environmental licence application gives an average of about 300 and a peak of about 350 construction personnel for a 22 month first phase, while press reports cite up to 1,200 temporary construction jobs across the wider multi phase project.

Irish reporting in late 2024 described construction as close to complete, with first medicine due off the line in 2026, and trade coverage in June 2026 put the site on track to start operations late in the year with 2026 as the peak period for commissioning, qualification and validation hiring. That is the phase where specialist teams arrive for months rather than weeks. Housing is tight regardless of the project: local reporting in February 2025 cited around 800 homes built a year against a stated need of 2,500 to 4,000. Raheen itself is a suburb, so the practical catchment is Limerick city, Adare and Newcastle West.
