Princess Elisabeth Island is Elia's artificial energy island about 45 km off the West Flanders coast, with project engineering and logistics coordinated from the Port of Ostend. Phase 1 is sized for at least 2.1 GW from the first two wind farm concessions and was reported at €3.6bn. All 23 concrete caissons, about 22,000 tonnes each, were completed on 20 August 2026. Sand reclamation follows, shore cables are scheduled for 2027 and 2028, electrical works from 2029, and first power is planned for 2031. The original HVDC contract was dropped in 2025 and a revised next phase is still being designed.
Onshore, Elia started works on Ventilus, an 82 km high voltage line between Zeebrugge and Avelgem, on 14 September 2026, with commissioning expected in 2030 or 2031. A court suspended one dewatering work at Izegem on 17 September while other sections continue. Ostend has about 72,800 residents, and the practical catchment runs to Nieuwpoort, about 18 km, Blankenberge, about 22 km, and Bruges, about 26 km.
