STMicroelectronics announced its silicon carbide campus in Catania on 31 May 2024, the same day the European Commission cleared the Italian state aid. Published investment is about EUR 5 billion, including roughly EUR 2 billion of public support under the EU Chips Act, for a 200 millimetre silicon carbide facility on ST's existing Etna Valley site. Full build-out capacity is given as up to 15,000 wafers a week, with an interim milestone of 5,000 wafers a week by the fourth quarter of 2028 and full capacity around 2032 to 2033.
The substrate plant was already under construction in mid 2024 and the industrial plan now extends to 2034, so cleanroom, process piping, electrical and qualification work is spread across several years. Italian coverage in 2026 reported friction over industrial water supply and concurrent wage support proceedings on legacy lines, so the ramp is real but not risk free. Catania is a large city with existing hotel stock, which helps short trips but not multi-month assignments where teams want kitchens, laundry and parking near the gate.
