The short version
Lyon is a base city. Some of the work is inside the metropolitan area, on the T9 and T10 tram sites, in the Vallée de la Chimie or on the eastern data centre builds. A lot of it is not: the nuclear outage campaigns at Bugey and Saint-Alban sit 40 and 50 km out, and the Lyon-Turin tunnel face is up the Maurienne valley. Bookers need somewhere with real housing stock, parking and a motorway or rail link, not a bed in the centre of a tourist city.

Nuclear outage work is a recurring cycle, not one continuous build, so plan intermittent multi-week mobilisations rather than a single long stay. Where an operator has not published a construction headcount, we say so rather than estimate it.
Where crews live
Vénissieux, Saint-Fons, Feyzin. South-east along the Rhône, next to the Vallée de la Chimie sites, on the T4 and the new T10, with A7 access for vans.
Vaulx-en-Velin and Carré de Soie. East, on Métro A and the new T9, close to Eurexpo and the eastern industrial and logistics belt.
Villeurbanne. Dense and well connected on Métro A and the T1 and T4 trams, a common base for project engineers who need both the centre and the eastern zone.
Saint-Priest, Chassieu, Meyzieu. Closest to the data centre cluster and the A43, more suburban stock and easier yard or street parking.
For Bugey and Saint-Alban we usually place people in the towns nearer the site rather than in Lyon itself, because a 40 to 50 km commute at shift-change is the thing crews complain about. Drive times we quote for those routes are estimates, not published figures.
Rules and cost lines
Short-let rules apply to tourist lets, not to genuine crew tenancies. In Lyon, letting a meublé de tourisme that is not your main residence requires a registration number on every listing plus a separate changement d'usage authorisation (Ville de Lyon). In law a meublé de tourisme is aimed at transient guests who do not take up residence (Code du tourisme guidance), and a genuine furnished lease or bail mobilité is a different regime (Service-Public). National registration rules changed again with a March 2026 decree and a new teleservice rolling out from May 2026 (Service-Public, 27 Jul 2026). We will tell you which regime each option is offered under; confirm the position for your own contract.
Taxe de séjour is a per-person, per-night line. Since 1 January 2026 unclassified accommodation in Lyon is charged at 5% of the nightly price excluding tax plus the 10% départemental share, capped at €5.39 per person per night (Lyon tourist office, updated 5 Jan 2026 · official rate lookup). Staff on assignment are generally liable unless they hold a seasonal contract in the commune (Service-Public). We show it as its own line rather than burying it.
Timing
The Fête des Lumières is the single biggest citywide squeeze each year: 5 to 8 December 2026 and 8 to 11 December 2027 (official site). Eurexpo takes the rest: the Foire de Lyon runs 27 March to 5 April 2027 (JDS) and Sirha Lyon returns 21 to 25 January 2027 (Sirha). If your stay straddles those dates, book earlier than you would otherwise.
