Booking.com Alternative for Contractor Housing: When It Stops Working for Crews
Booking.com works for short trips and small teams. For crews of ten or more, stays past 30 nights, or projects across several countries, a specialist booker like Bonjour Residences holds the host relationships and sends one invoice, while each Booking.com property invoices separately.
The short version
Booking.com works well for a site visit, a two-night audit or a small team with flexible dates. It gets harder when you are housing ten or more people in one town for several weeks, when the project runs over, or when finance wants one invoice instead of a folder of receipts. At that point the question is not which website to use. It is who holds the relationship with the hosts once the booking is made.
This article sets out where Booking.com fits for crew accommodation, where it starts to strain, and what the realistic alternatives are, including ours. Bonjour Residences is an independent booker for contractor, workforce and project accommodation across 27 European markets. We do not own or operate any property.
When Booking.com is the right tool
Worth saying plainly: for a lot of business travel it is the fastest option there is. If the answer to most of these is yes, keep using it:
- One to three people.
- Stays of a week or two, with dates that are unlikely to move.
- A town with plenty of hotel stock near the site.
- Card payment and a per-stay invoice from each property are fine for your finance team.
Booking.com for Business adds a free company account on top, with team members, travel budgets and the option to add your VAT number at checkout. For individual trips, that covers a lot.
Where it starts to strain for crews
Stays longer than 30 nights
By default, properties on Booking.com accept stays of up to 30 nights. A property can opt in to longer stays, and Booking.com's own connectivity documentation caps that setting at 90 nights. So for a long project, the set of properties you can book in one go gets smaller, and anything past 90 nights needs a second booking.
That matters because crew stays rarely end when planned. Across 182 stays we have booked, the median was 14.5 nights but the average was 55, and 32% ran longer than 30 nights. The gap between those two numbers is mostly overruns and extensions.
Booking more than a handful of rooms
Properties can set a group policy that kicks in above a room count they choose, anywhere from more than two rooms to more than ten. When it applies, the booker is told that "different policies and additional fees may apply", and the property is expected to follow up with its prepayment, cancellation deadline and charges. In practice, a crew booking can still mean a separate conversation with each property about terms.
One invoice per property
Booking.com does not issue invoices for stays. Its partner guidance is clear that the reservation is a direct transaction between the guest and the property, so each property sends its own invoice. Twelve people across four properties and two countries means at least four invoices, often in different formats and currencies, each needing to be chased and matched. We wrote about that problem in Stop chasing receipts from hosts every time your crew moves country.
Who picks up the phone
When a boiler fails at 9pm or a worker is locked out, the crew needs someone who knows the booking, the property and the project. On a platform, that is usually the host or a general support line, and the person managing the crew back at the office becomes the go-between.
The realistic alternatives
None of these is right for every job. It depends on headcount, length of stay and how many markets you are in.
- Aparthotels and hotels, booked direct. Good for mid-size groups in cities with plenty of stock. You negotiate once per property, but still run one contract and one invoice per property.
- Local letting agents. Useful for long stays in one town. Contracts are often built for residential lets, with deposits, notice periods and local-language paperwork.
- Corporate housing providers. Strong for relocations and single executives. Usually priced and structured for one person or family per unit rather than a crew.
- A specialist crew accommodation booker. One contact sources across hosts and markets, holds the host relationships and handles changes and extensions. This is the model we run.

Where the savings come from
The biggest lever on cost is not the booking channel. It is matching the type of accommodation to the length of stay. A hotel rate that makes sense for four nights is expensive for eight weeks, and a furnished flat that is good value for eight weeks may not take a four-night booking at all. Our clients have saved 20-30% by using the correct market for the length of stay. More on that in Long-stay accommodation for project teams in Europe.
Questions to ask before you move off Booking.com
- How many of your crew stays run past 30 nights, and how often do they get extended?
- How many invoices did finance reconcile for accommodation last month?
- Who does the crew call when something goes wrong in a property?
- Are you booking in more than one country in the same quarter?
- Does anyone on your side have time to negotiate group terms property by property?
If you are also weighing up specialist providers, our pieces on the Comfy Workers alternative and the AltoVita alternative use the same checklist. For the full service, see contractor accommodation and long-term project worker accommodation.
FAQ
Can you book more than 30 nights on Booking.com?
Only at properties that have opted in to longer stays. By default properties accept stays of up to 30 nights, and the long-stay setting goes up to a maximum of 90 nights.
Does Booking.com give you one invoice for a group booking?
No. Booking.com does not issue invoices for stays. Each property invoices the guest directly, so a crew spread across several properties gets one invoice per property.
Is Booking.com for Business an alternative for crew accommodation?
It is a free company account that adds team management, budgets and VAT details to Booking.com bookings. It helps with individual business travel, but the stay-length limits and one-invoice-per-property setup still apply.
Does Bonjour Residences own the properties it books?
No. We are an independent booker working with a vetted network of 3,000+ suppliers and 70,000+ units across 27 European markets.
Is there a minimum booking size?
No. There are no minimum volumes and no exclusivity. Many of our bookings are for two or three people, and the same process scales to whole crews.
