The Brenner Base Tunnel runs from Innsbruck to Fortezza in South Tyrol, built by BBT SE at a total cost of about €10.54bn in January 2023 prices. On the Italian side the Mules 2-3 lot, worth €993m, finished boring in May 2025 and its main tubes broke through at the border in July 2026. By June 2026 about 64.9 of its 65 km had been excavated, and the work had moved on to linings, cross passages and railway equipment.
South of the portal, RFI is building the Fortezza to Ponte Gardena section of the access line, a €1.07bn contract for about 22.5 km held by a consortium led by Webuild with Implenia. The tunnel boring machine Kathrin started on the Gardena tunnel in May 2026, the Chiusa access adit was 1,400 of 1,800 metres complete and the Scaleres tunnel was being prepared. Fortezza is a small village, so tunnel and fit-out crews base in Bressanone, Vipiteno, Chiusa and Ponte Gardena.
