The Brenner Base Tunnel is a rail tunnel between Innsbruck and Fortezza, built by the Austrian and Italian company BBT SE at a total cost of about €10.54bn in January 2023 prices. The Austrian end lot, H53 Pfons-Brenner, is worked by PORR from the Wolf and Stafflach site area in Steinach am Brenner, in the Wipptal south of Innsbruck. The lot ran round the clock on four shifts, and on 28 July 2026 its main tubes were joined to the Italian lot at the border.
With excavation essentially finished, the work moves on to lining, finishing and rail and electrical fit-out. The 2024 programme targets opening at the end of 2032, and BBT SE is due to publish a new programme with a firm date in the second half of 2026. The European Court of Auditors reported in January 2026 that costs were up about 40 percent since 2019. Steinach had about 3,661 residents in January 2025, and BBT SE describes the PORR workers' camp at Stafflach as fully occupied, so other crews base in Matrei am Brenner, the Stubai valley and Innsbruck.
