Göschenen, Uri. The second Gotthard road tube has a budget of CHF 2.14bn and is due to open in 2030.

The Swiss Federal Roads Office is building a second tube for the A2 Gotthard road tunnel, with installation sites at Göschenen in Uri and Airolo in Ticino. The budget is CHF 2.14bn. Two tunnel boring machines are working from opposite ends. Alessandra, from the north, reached the fault zone cavern in April 2026 after about 14 months of boring. Paulina, from the south, was stopped by difficult geology in June 2024 and restarted in 2026, with full face boring expected from about September.

The second tube is due to open in 2030, after which the first tube will be refurbished and both open from 2033. Ticino press estimated the accumulated delay at six to eight months in May 2026. The project has its own staff housing in both villages, the Breiti building in Göschenen and the former Hotel Alpina in Airolo, so outside demand comes mainly from specialist subcontractors and short notice crews, who base in Andermatt and Altdorf to the north and Faido and Biasca to the south.
