Northern Lights, the carbon transport and storage venture owned by Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies, took its investment decision on phase 2 in March 2025. The NOK 7.5bn expansion at the onshore terminal in Energiparken, Øygarden municipality, north west of Bergen, raises capacity from 1.5 to at least 5 million tonnes of CO2 a year through extra storage tanks, a second jetty and more injection capacity. The project also has a €131m EU grant. Phase 1 has been operating since 2025.
Civil works on the second jetty and the storage tanks were under way in February 2026, and in March the venture reported construction on site increasing and on schedule. Skanska is on site, and in September 2026 Aker Solutions began installation at Øygarden after fabrication at Stord under its EPC contract. Øygarden municipality had 40,810 residents in the second quarter of 2026, but the terminal sits in a rural industrial area, so crews base in Straume, elsewhere on Sotra and in Bergen.
