Repsol is building the Ecoplanta, a plant that turns waste into renewable methanol and circular products, inside its industrial complex at El Morell in the Tarragonès, Catalonia. The board approved an investment of more than €800m in January 2025. The plant will process up to 400,000 tonnes of waste a year, and Repsol says construction will create about 2,800 jobs, with 340 direct, indirect and induced jobs once it runs.
Repsol kept the 2029 start date in its March 2026 strategic plan. El Morell granted the building licence in May 2026, and Repsol said earthworks would start shortly, so the largest workforce is likely in 2027 and 2028. El Morell had 3,811 residents in January 2025 and sits in the middle of the Tarragona, Reus and Valls triangle, which is where crews on a build of this size will base.
