SSAB is replacing the blast furnaces at its Oxelösund steel mill in Södermanland with an electric arc furnace, a change the company says will cut Sweden's carbon dioxide emissions by about 3 percent. Appeals over species protection paused Vattenfall's power line to the furnace in spring 2026, and SSAB announced a commissioning delay in May. All appeals were withdrawn in June, line construction resumed and production is now expected in the second quarter of 2027. SSAB has also approved SEK 3.3bn for a new quenching line at the site. Oxelösund municipality had 11,962 residents in 2025, so installation, grid and commissioning crews spread to Nyköping, about 10 minutes away, and Norrköping.
