SuedLink is a roughly 700 km underground HVDC link from northern Germany to the south, built by TenneT and TransnetBW at a reported cost of about €10bn. It runs as two 2 GW connections, one of them from Wilster in Schleswig-Holstein to the Bergrheinfeld/West grid node in Landkreis Schweinfurt, Lower Franconia. TransnetBW is building the converter station there, about 20 metres high with close to a hectare of buildings. Construction in Bavaria began in 2023, the project has been fully permitted since October 2025 and the Bundesnetzagentur expects the grid connection in 2028.
The Elbe crossing was completed in August 2026, and at a site visit on 17 September project staff said works in Landkreis Schweinfurt were on schedule. In late September geological risks near the salt mine at Bad Friedrichshall, on the Baden-Württemberg branch, halted construction there, and the effect on the wider programme is not yet known. Bergrheinfeld had 5,208 residents at the end of 2025, so converter and cable crews base in Schweinfurt, Grafenrheinfeld and Sennfeld, where rooms are already marketed to contractor teams.
