SuedLink is the roughly 700 km underground HVDC link from Schleswig-Holstein to southern Germany, built by TenneT and TransnetBW. One of its two connections starts at the Wilster converter station in Nortorf, next to the town of Wilster in Kreis Steinburg, and runs to Bergrheinfeld in Bavaria. Hitachi Energy is general contractor for the converter. The foundation stone was laid on 18 November 2025, and cable civil works in Schleswig-Holstein started at the same time. About 23 km of the route runs through the state before crossing under the Elbe.
In August 2026 the building contractor reported about 70 percent of the shell complete, with the transformer, control and medium voltage buildings finished and fit-out starting. SuedLink as a whole is targeted for the end of 2028. Wilster has about 4,400 residents, and a sister converter is being built at Brunsbüttel, so the two sites draw on the same beds. Crews base in Wilster, Itzehoe, Brunsbüttel and Glückstadt, where rooms are already marketed for projects in Kreis Steinburg.
