voestalpine Stahl Donawitz is building an electric arc furnace unit at its Donawitz works in Leoben, Styria, with two furnaces, a scrap hall and a 220 kV power line. It is part of the €1.5bn greentec steel programme approved in March 2023 for Donawitz and Linz. The unit is planned to produce about 850,000 tonnes of steel a year from 2027, and a further expansion of about €100m to 1.5 million tonnes by 2030 has board approval but is waiting on funding.
In April 2026 voestalpine reported around 300 people working on eleven sub-projects. By late August the main furnace parts were installed, core facilities are due in autumn 2026 and commissioning is planned for the first half of 2027. Crews base in Leoben and nearby Trofaiach, about 7 km from Donawitz, St. Peter-Freienstein and Niklasdorf, where local worker room providers describe demand as high all year because of heavy industry.
