voestalpine is building greentec steel Linz, a green power electric arc furnace and new steel mill inside its existing works in Linz, Upper Austria. The group approved €1.5bn in March 2023 for its Linz and Donawitz furnaces, with about €1bn for Linz. Construction started in October 2023, Primetals Technologies supplies the 180-tonne furnace and PORR is carrying out the building works. The furnace hall measures about 100 by 60 by 65 metres and uses about 15,500 tonnes of structural steel.
The furnace reached the site on 21 September 2026, voestalpine calls 2026 the assembly year, and commissioning is planned for the first half of 2027. The company reports about 750 people on site each day, rising to more than 1,200 in later phases, drawn from more than 500 suppliers, most of them Austrian. Linz had 214,987 residents on 1 January 2026, and visiting crews base in Linz and the bordering towns of Leonding, Traun and Ansfelden.
